As I mentioned in my previous blog, in this one I will choose some movies based on novels that need to be remade and I also decided to add books I want to be made as movies. But before I get to that, I've been reading lots of comments on the web about movies that are based on books and I would like to add some stuff I didn't mention in my previous blog. People on the comment sections in various forum are debating saying movies have to be their own thing and they mustn't be connected to the book they came from. On the one hand, I agree, book movies must have coherent plots, meaning you mustn't have read the book in order to follow the plot, but on the other hand, the movie, I believe, must follow the book's plot as truthfully as possible. If not, then why do you use the book in the first place. Just write something original. You would not take Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and put him in the future with spaceships and make him a bounty hunter solving mysteries and catching waned men, wait, that's awesome, I would watch that movie!! Let's see now, another example...Hollywood filmed the true life story of a doctor nicknamed "Patch" Adams and hollywoodized (is this a wrod?) it. Even the real "Patch" Adams was offended and dismissed the movie entirely. As did Rick Riordan when he saw what they did with his character, Percy Jackson. This just means that you have to respect the source material, but you also have to make a movie that doesn't need a friend who has read the books, in order to understand what the hell is going on.
Let's continue to our main course. Films from books that need to be remade.
I Am Number Four
Following the success of the Twilight franchise Hollywood was looking for the next best thing, so they took every young adult book series and made a movie for the silver screen. One of those was I Am Number Four. The only problem was that they tried to pass it off as a twilight-like love story to follow the trend and that was their biggest mistake. The movie flopped and was completely forgotten, failing to attract the book fans, but also the demographic they aimed for.
Why they should remake it: Making every movie a twilight clone isn't the right move. They didn't give it a fighting chance. The books could become a series of great sci-fi movies with a lot of action. It is true the first book has some teen romance, but by emphasizing on that you lose sight of the big picture, which is the grand scale battle of an alien race fighting alongside humans to defeat the alien race of the Magadorians, who want to conquer and eventually suck the life of planet Earth. Needless to say all hell breaks loose. Superpowers, hand to hand combat, bloody fights, death and destruction. Make the movie the right way and let it find its target audience. No one will be disappointed.
Seventh Son (real title: The Spook's Apprentice)
Yes....this time they didn't even keep the book title. I don't even have to tell you if they got the book right. The movie was an awful attempt to create a franchise stepping on the success of darkening old kids fairy tales, like they did with Snow White and The Huntsman. To make things short, they failed, miserably. They believed so little in the movie that they even changed its original release date.
Why They Should Remake it: Here you have a Harry Potter-like book series, but a lot darker. Witches, assassin's, old gods, magic, ghosts, ghasts you name it. These books have everything. Nothing is what it seems. Nothing is just black or white. Strategy and knowledge is the key every Spook has to use. His weapons to defeat each creature of the dark. This has the makings of a great series of horror movies.
Eragon
One of the most anticipated movies turned out to be one of the biggest flops. Wooden acting, awful script. They butchered the story and destroyed the atmosphere the novels created.
Why They Should Remake it: People are looking for the next Lord of The Rings and Eragon can fill this void. Dragons, Elves, Dwarves, Magic, Epic Battles this movie could have everything. A great world to get immersed in and a great story of friendship, loyalty and defeating the odds. Did I mention it has dragons? And Epic battles?
This is the first part of the book films that Hollywood should remake. Look forward to the second part and my suggestions of book series they haven't yet tried to bring to the silver screen. Till next time...
